5. Protecting Rivers. Restoring Ecosystems. Creating Tangible Community Impacts

The impact on both communities and ecosystems is already visible. First, the program is providing stable, dignified income for informal waste pickers who were previously earning irregular and unsafe wages. By integrating them into structured river restoration tasks—collection, sorting, and ecological maintenance—we are strengthening livelihoods while enhancing environmental stewardship.

We are also protecting degraded riparian corridors. Through continuous cleaning, invasive species removal, and replanting of native vegetation, previously neglected stretches of riverbank are now recovering their ecological function. In several informal settlements, the cleared and restored spaces have become clean, safe playing grounds for local children—areas that were once hazardous due to litter, sharp materials, and stagnant waste.
Additionally, the program is eliminating the constant cycle of recontamination. By establishing supervised restoration zones and community-driven waste-handling systems, open disposal at these hotspots has significantly decreased. This ensures that every restored section remains clean long after the initial cleanup.

Through Our Adopt-A-River Program, we continues to demonstrate how shared responsibility can drive real environmental transformation in Kenya’s urban river systems. Over the past months, we have partnered with three private organizations that have each taken responsibility for restoring specific river sections. Their financial support directly funds community-led restoration activities carried out by women and youth groups who are at the heart of our work.

Vision

Our Vision

We aim to scale this model into a sustainable and transformative restoration approach that can be replicated across Kenya’s urban river networks. Our long-term goal is to rehabilitate heavily polluted rivers that contribute to the flow of plastic waste into the marine environment, improving both inland and coastal ecosystems.

Community Collaboration

Our partnerships with youth and women's groups create sustainable employment opportunities while driving environmental restoration. Together, we're building a circular economy that benefits everyone.

Economic Empowerment

Through our plastic credits system, we financially empower the communities leading the restoration work, creating a sustainable model that rewards environmental stewardship.
