Who We Are

Chemolex is a sustainability leader offering impactful plastic waste management solutions and services that protects millions of people and resources that are vital to life. Building on a decade of innovation, we deliver comprehensive science-based solutions, data-driven insights, and world-class technologies and products that advance the trasnformation to clean, green and circular planet.

Problem

According to verified scientific study; an estimated 157,000 Metric tons of plastic wastes leaks in to the Indian Ocean every year. The flow of these plastic wastes into the marine environment occurs through a variety of pathways, but rivers are the largest contributors. Removing these “plastic soups” from the vast water bodies such as Lakes and Oceans is challenging and estimated to cost up to USD$ 6 Billion per year. Plastic pollution degrades ecosystems, imperils human health and livelihood. Unmanaged plastic pollution harms both the marine and terrestrial ecosystems and contaminates soil, fisheries, and livestock creating food insecurity. Also, it is the poorest and most vulnerable that are at highest risk since they often live close to where plastic wastes are routinely disposed. They also live in marginalized areas and informal settlements that are subject to blocked waterways which leads to catastrophic flooding with devastating impacts.

Our Solutions

Chemolex organization has developed innovative and holistic interventions that solves the plastic pollution at every stage of the plastic life-cycle. The innovative river plastic capture devices have the capability to trap and remove all plastic wastes flowing along rivers while the novel Biopactic Material aim to directly replace the use of single-use plastic polymers in packaging, diapers, sanitary wares and fashion industries.
Device

River Plastic Waste Capture Device

Chemolex Company have designed, manufactured and installed 10 river waste plastic capture devices along River Athi and its 4 major tributaries that have arrested up to 10,000 metric tons of the plastic wastes from flowing into marine environment. The removal of the plastic wastes flowing along the major urban rivers is accompanied by implementing effective strategies that address the existing poor waste management regimes and promote principles of circular economy geared towards optimum resource recovery from plastic and other wastes generated from the households. Over the last 5 years, Chemolex organization have achieved significant success in trapping and removing 125,000 metric tons of plastic wastes that would have ended in the marine environment. Chemolex organization established 1650 strategic waste collection points within the major informal settlements where there were no single waste management infrastucture. The strategic waste collection points have eliminated poor solid waste disposal and have significantly improved solid waste management in low-income informal settlements in Kenya. Our organization trained and empowered 50,000 women to start and operate sustainable waste management businesses. We designed and constructed 2 Community Cooker technologies (waste to energy technology) that has enabled more than 100 women in informal settlements to engage in commercial baking and run sustainable hotel businesses by utilizing the non-plastic segments of the wastes trapped and removed from various river sections to produce clean heat energy.

Direct Plastic replacement

Biopactic Material Film

The Biopactic Material is a novel, sustainable, reusable and 100% biodegradable material that is a direct and superior replacement to the conventional plastic polymers film in making food and product packaging, diapers and sanitary ware and threads for fashion industry. The production of the Biopactic material is through a patented Advanced Precision Bio-conversion technology that utilizes the invasive water hyacinth weeds that is a menace in Lake Victoria and other fresh-water bodies globally. The ultimate aim of the Biopactic material is to provide a superior replacement to plastic polymers (polypropylene, polyethylene) in critical industries such as packaging and product manufacturing while also addressing the global threat of the invasive water-hyacinth plants in more than 1000 fresh-water ecosystems worldwide.
